As long as you have measured your ingredients correctly you have nothing to worry about. To be sure always test it using a ph strip to make sure it is somewhere between 7-10. Using recipes will help you understand the proper proportions of lye versus oils required to avoid making skin-irritating soap. For example, crumbly soap is an indication that it contains too much lye. Essential oils are mostly plant-based, and you can combine them to create custom aromas.
Just leave a bit extra plastic to easily grab and pull the bubble wrap off when the soap is set. You can skip this step if you prefer to make just smooth surface soap without any pattern. I have worked with lye for many years and can still remember how nervous I was the first time.
How to Make Your Own DIY Soap Without Handling Lye
After the rest period, mix for 1 minute, then allow to rest again for 10 minutes. After 30 days of patiently waiting, your soap is ready to use. If you have ever used a drain opener in your home, you’ve already used a form of lye. Don’t freeze the milk in its entirety as one solid mass. It’s nearly impossible to properly dissolve your lye granules in a big block of frozen milk. Freezing the milk counteracts this, preventing it from becoming too hot too fast.
If it says ‘beauty bar’ or something like that, then it’s probably a detergent. Laws dictate what manufacturers can put on their labels, but they’ll do their best to fool you. Let the soap in the mold for 24 hours, although the soap tends to become solid in just a couple of hours but it is extremely sensitive in the first 24 hours. Oftentimes people who do not wait enough and take out the soap from the mold will notice that the soap is crumbling in their hand. This is because the core of the soap is not solid yet, and this also depends on the size of the soap itself. My personal recommendation is to use fragrance oils which are actually made for soap making, you can find these at almost any hobby shop, both online or offline.
Quick Soap Making History
But you don’t need to have your own dairy animal. You can make milk soap from scratch with simple ingredients from the grocery store. Soap making is a wonderful self-sufficiency skill that anyone can learn to do, even if your homestead is a small lot in town. How do you wrap/package/store homemade soap?
When making melt and pour soap you DO NOT need to use or handle lye yourself. Just keep in mind that lye is a natural chemical, but it is caustic. Wear gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection, and make sure you’re in a well-ventilated area .
Fill the mold
It’s also important to know that certain recipes come to trace faster than others. Soap recipes with high amounts of olive oil, for example, take a lot of blending to come to trace. Recipes with high amounts of solid oils will trace much more quickly.
Good options are lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, folded orange. Soap recipes are formulated with very specific lye-to-oil ratios. There needs to be just enough lye in the recipe to turn oil into soap, but not so much to leave lye in the finished batch. If you swap out one oil for another, you run the risk of creating a lye-heavy soap. Only experienced soap makers who know how to recalculate lye amounts should substitute oils.
So, if you see a fragrance oil that says “accelerates trace,” you’ll want to blend to just light trace and work quickly to get it into the mold. Other ingredients that can make your soap trace faster are clays and oatmeal. Also, it’s nearly impossible to unmold cold process soap from rigid plastic molds, because bars are soft and sticky for several weeks after they’re made. You can’t make a transparent soap with the cold process method. The cold process method makes a lovely soap, but it’s always opaque. If you want a transparent soap you must use melt and pour, or a variation of the hot process method.
If you are up to this challenge or are an experienced soap maker, follow this tutorial for the traditional way of making soap. I decided to make the soap with honey, I wanted to highlight it with a honeycomb pattern. The good news is you can make soap without buying an expensive honeycomb mold. It contains antioxidants and enzymes that protect your skin from free radicals. Its anti-microbial qualities are great for cleansing the skin and clearing acne spots. Honey also keeps the moisture in the skin and thus hydrating.
Measure the fats/oils by weight and then place in a crock pot to melt on low heat. The secret to old fashioned lye soap’s cleansing power is in it’s high lye content and lack of exotic oils. Usually made with leftover cooking fats and lye made from wood ashes, townspeople would gather on soap-making days, preparing large batches together. Another common toxic beauty ingredient in soaps is sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate .
If you’re making lavender peppermint soap, use one pound of soap base, 15 drops of lavender essential oil, and 15 drops of peppermint essential oil. Here’s how to make soap bars at home using the basic cold process soap recipe. It seems complicated at first, but it’s quite easy once you get started, and it’s a wonderfully rewarding hobby. When you introduce lye to fats and oils, it breaks the molecules apart and bonds with them, creating a new compound – soap! You can watch it happen when you’re making soap from scratch.
I love these for stirring lye water solution, scraping oils out of measuring cups, and getting every last bit of soap batter out of the pot and into the mold. A good friend of mine has a respiratory condition that makes it nearly impossible to work with lye. She started her business working with just melt and pour soap bases. Although that became profitable she found even more opportunity by using no sweat melt and pour as well as hand milling soap for re-batch. There’s kind of a second way to make soap with lye. Soap makers tend to have a stash of ugly soap – basically, batches that didn’t turn out the way you’d planned.
A softer soap means it melts away more quickly. This isn’t a necessary tool, but it makes your finished soap bars so much nicer looking. After pouring into the mold, give a light spritz over the surface of the soap.
If you are unsure where to buy essential oils, check outthis postto help you find a brand that works bestfor you. Soap doesn’t need a scent to get your skin clean. But if you’d like to add a pleasant smell, you can use essential oils or fragrance oils. Keep in mind, too, that DIY soap tends to have a lighter scent than traditional, store-bought soap.
